Vedanta is one of India’s largest private sector power generators. The availability of power in India is increasing, but demand outstrips supply leading to a substantial power shortage. Around 280 million people in India do not have electricity connections and the Government aims to supply power to all homes by 2019. 



The power business of Vedanta Resources is owned by Vedanta Limited is owned by Vedanta Limited (formwerlty known as Sesa Sterlite/Sesa Goa Ltd) ewhich is one of the leading power producers in India with a built-up capacity of 9000MW. As of March 2016, our enitre power portfolio is now operational.   

Vedanta Ltd. power operations include a 2,400 MW (four units of 600 MW each) thermal coal-based commercial power facility at Jharsuguda with all four units currently operational. The Jharsuguda 2,400 MW power plant, operated at a lower Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 39% during FY 2015-16 due to lower market demand. 

The company’s power business also include Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd. TSPL had signed a power purchase agreement with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) for the establishment of 1,980 MW (three units of 660 MW each) thermal coal-based commercial power facilities Two units of 660 MW are now operational. The full ramp up will significantly increasing our commercial power volumes.

The power business also includes 270 MW power plant at BALCO’s Korba facility. Out of the two 300 MW units of the 1,200 MW Korba Power Plant destined for commercial power: one 300 MW unit is currently under trial run, and will be commissioned during Q1 FY 2015-16; the second commercial unit is expected to be commissioned during Q2 FY 2015-16.Due to the commisioning of addiitonal units at TSPL and BALCO, power sales grew by 23% in FY2015-16.

We are one of the leading wind power producers in India with a capacity of 274 MW, commissioned by Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), and we have a 100 MW power plant at MALCO Energy Limited situated at Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu in Southern India.

Our Commercial Power generation business are located across India which includes 2,400 MW Jharsuguda Power Plant in Odisha, 270 MW BALCO power plant in Chhattisgarh, 100 MW MALCO power plant in Tamil Nadu and 274 MW HZL with power plants at various locations in India. We are also setting up a 1,980 MW Talwandi Sabo power plant in the state of Punjab.
