4000+ Nand Ghars: Making an Impact

By Team Vedanta

At Vedanta, working with communities in and around operations to bring meaningful impact and healthy relationships, lies at the core of our business. Through trust and transparency, we transform lives by adopting globally recognised human rights principles, thereby becoming the driver for the communities that we operate around. For years, we have worked towards generating effective livelihood opportunities for the youth and communities as a way to ensure a dignified future for them. This social transformation at Vedanta creates the base for ‘Transforming for Good’.

With an aim to transform the lives of women and children, 4000+ Nand Ghars have been set up across different states in India. This will propel us towards improving the lives of women and children, with holistic development opportunities and a focus on health, education, and empowerment. We are committed to the Prime Minister's national vision of eradicating child malnutrition, providing education and healthcare to our communities, and empowering women with skill development. The 4000+ Nand Ghars operate in 13 states across the country, helping over 1,40,000 children and 1,05,000 women beneficiaries - shaping the vision of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Modernised Anganwadis
What exactly is a Nand Ghar? One can think of them as an evolved version of Anganwadis - education and skill development centres spread across the country. At Vedanta, we aim to transform this network of Anganwadis with modern infrastructure by offering a bouquet of integrated services that include e-learning for children, primary healthcare services for community members, and economic empowerment opportunities for women. These state-of-the-art Nand Ghars are education & health centres for children in the morning, while becoming health centres for the community and skill development centres for women in the second half of the day. Nand Ghar believes in an integrated approach towards entrepreneurship training - propelling women to start their micro-enterprises by providing credit linkages. This becomes an excellent opportunity to transform the lives of millions of women and push them towards self-dependence in the upcoming years.

COVID 19 Initiatives at Nand Ghar
While we constantly work towards promoting agricultural projects, microenterprises and skill development projects, the pandemic tested us in its own ways. We pooled in enough resources to ensure that our skill centres were able to function without a break. We conducted online training sessions and successfully placed ~10,000+ youth. The confidence and skills gained through Vedanta’s initiatives also helped farmers and rural women emerge as enterprising individuals who quickly identified emerging market opportunities to break barriers and rebuild their lives.

Poshan Maah, 2022
The philanthropic arm of Vedanta Limited, The Anil Agarwal Foundation (AAF), is celebrating Poshan Maah 2022. The celebration kicked off by introducing #75RecipesOfPoshan for children and women across all Nand Ghars, aligning with the objective of right nourishment for all. The campaign has been crafted to raise awareness about nutritional ingredients that suit the ‘local palate’ while being highly beneficial for the health of children and pregnant women. The 75 Poshan recipes have been thoughtfully prepared to combat undernourishment of women and children while keeping in mind the ingredients that are suitable to the palate of the rural belt.

The journey continues
Our commitment towards ensuring sustainable livelihoods is evident from the fact that in the last five years alone, ~ $-20 million+ has been spent on livelihood initiatives. Nothing can be more gratifying than the beneficiaries themselves testifying to our efforts towards enhancing their quality of life. Our journey continues as we commit ourselves towards crafting an empowering and enabling future for an ’Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
