A Greener Legacy in the Making
Team Vedanta
India today stands at the cusp of unprecedented growth. As the fourth-largest global economy, it has become a 4-trillion-dollar powerhouse with a development model that balances both economic ambition with environmental integrity and social equity. Vedanta, India's leading producer of critical minerals, energy transition metals, power and technology, plays a critical role in enabling this journey. Sustainability is deeply embedded into business strategy, influencing decisions across the value chain. Responsibility comes with scale and reach, and Vedanta is committed to building a greener, more inclusive, and resilient future.
Vedanta's approach to climate action is clear, focused, and measurable with the company adopting a four-lever decarbonization strategy encompassing renewable energy scale-up, switching to low-carbon fuels, energy and process efficiency, and carbon offsets. The company has increased its renewable energy round-the-clock equivalent power capacity to 1.03 GW (gigawatt) through power delivery agreements and is on track to achieve 2.5 GW of renewable energy by 2030, towards the ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. The renewable energy projects include a mix of wind, solar and pump storage technologies. The 1 GW renewable energy will potentially enable Vedanta to mitigate more than 6 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This is roughly equivalent to carbon sequestration by nearly 350 million trees annually.
Vedanta is driving sustainability at scale with over 350 high-impact environmental initiatives underway across its businesses. These efforts reflect the company's commitment to reducing its ecological footprint and advancing responsible operations.
Highlights of Vedanta's environmental performance include:
- 2.61 Billion Units of renewable energy utilised across operations.
- Deployment of one of India's largest lithium-ion forklift fleets in aluminium plants, LNG-powered trucks for logistics, and the country's first battery-operated vehicles in underground zinc mining.
- 44,000 tonnes of biomass utilised, along with support for Punjab's largest torrefied bio-pellet facility in Mansa (Bathinda).
- 3 million trees planted since 2021 as part of the World Economic Forum's Trillion Trees Movement.
- Water positive status achieved by Hindustan Zinc, Cairn Oil & Gas, and Sesa Iron Ore Business.
- Single-use plastic-free operations at TSPL, Cairn Oil & Gas, and VGCB.
Vedanta has been rewarded with the prestigious (B) rating by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its excellent efforts in water security and climate change, demonstrating its strong commitment to sustainability. In addition, the company's aluminium and zinc product portfolios are Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verified, thereby offering transparent data on environmental footprint. Vedanta's aluminium business is part of the international Aluminium Stewardship Initiative for responsible sourcing of raw materials and sustainable manufacturing.
Enabling Social Transformation
True sustainability extends beyond environmental metrics, it must uplift communities. We are reaching over 48 million people through our community development programmes. Through initiatives such as Nand Ghar, we are transforming early childhood education, access to nutrition and healthcare and skill development for women. Our integrated social interventions are aligned with national development goals and designed to foster shared value across the communities we serve.
We continue to advance our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion agenda. Nearly 22% of our full-time workforce consists of women, with 40% of our campus recruits being female. Our leadership diversity stands at 28%, supported by targeted initiatives such as the Emerging Women Leaders Programme and inclusive hiring across the LGBTQIA+ communities.
Digitising Sustainability Governance
Vedanta has strengthened its digital-first approach to safety and sustainability by implementing Enablon, a leading enterprise platform for environment, health, and governance (ESG) data management. The platform has enabled a proactive approach to safety through real-time data analytics, centralized reporting, and predictive insights, enhancing transparency, compliance, and accountability across operations.
