Punjab is mainly an agrarian economy with the majority of its population dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. The outstanding growth of the intensive farming pattern of wheat and rice has resulted in manifestations of several adverse effects like groundwater exploitation, soil degradation, and various socio-economic problems. Intensive agricultural practices without adherence to scientific principles and ecological aspects have led to a loss of soil health and depletion of freshwater resources and receding groundwater table. Understanding this need, TSPL initiated Promotion of Sustainable Agricultural Practices – Navi Disha.

The objective is to boost farmers’ income and sustainable food production through improved sustainable agricultural practices.

Role of women in society’s development is crucial. Given the number of single earning member households, our society needs women to venture into the entrepreneurial domain. SHG (Self Help Group) plays a pivotal role in making women self-reliant. To provide livelihood opportunities to rural women, (especially women from families that are landless, marginal or small farmers) through savings, credit and income generation activities by developing linkages with banks, government agencies as well as markets, TSPL has initiated SHG project in association with Ambuja Cement Foundation in 7 villages in FY'2020-21 covering more than 500 rural women.

The aim of the project is to strengthen the economic situation of female members and create social capital.

The health programmes of TSPL address primary healthcare issues around affordability and accessibility as well as basic and quality healthcare. This healthcare initiative of TSPL enables strengthening of the government health system by means of supporting a rural primary health centre. The supported health centre enables communities to avail general healthcare, specialised treatment, and laboratory services. TSPL intends to provide access to healthcare services free of cost to the general public.

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a basic need for all. Clean drinking water and wastewater management - both are a challenge for some communities. During monsoons, the wastewater from the pond flows back into the village streets causing difficulty in the movement of people on the road and damages public and private property. This wastewater management project in all the three villages shall address the water logging problem and facilitate man and vehicle movement, especially during the monsoon season. Additionally, the excess water shall be used for irrigation purposes in agricultural land and fields which are deprived of canal water supply.

The objective of this initiative is to secure adequate and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for the rural communities.

Education is one of the key pillars of sustainable development. A well-structured classroom is one of the most important factors of learning. TSPL, being a socially responsible organisation, has been extending support to the educational institutions in its periphery for the holistic development of students under the Integrated School Development programme. School expansion and upgradation shall provide better education facilities for children enhancing learning and students’ academic performance.

The objective is to improve both the quality of education and the learning experience of students.

Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in improving the socio-economic growth rate and lifestyle of the communities. To help create infrastructural amenities for the community, TSPL has taken up various community infrastructure development activities in due consultation with community members and reached out to nearly 4,500 persons. The company-aided infrastructure projects in its operational villages are:

Community park: Public spaces provide ample opportunities for people to assimilate and come together as a society. To provide recreational opportunities to the people, one public park was developed in Talwandi Aklian Village.

Installation of concrete benches: For seating facilities of the general public and elderly people of the community, TSPL installed 400 concrete benches in 7 villages.

Installation of Solar Street Lights: Keeping in mind the safety of pedestrians, riders, drivers, and the general public, 25 solar street lights were installed in Talwandi Aklia village.

Renovation of village crematorium: Lack of adequate facilities at the village crematorium was addressed by TSPL in two of its core intervention villages. Wheelbarrow system along with fire proof structure was installed in crematoriums for providing eco-friendly solutions for cremation of bodies.

During the COVID 19 pandemic, TSPL came forward to stand by the community and extend a helping hand. Taking into consideration the immediate needs of the community, TSPL undertook the following initiatives:
